How to Improve Wi-Fi Speed at Home
To improve Wi-Fi speed you have to fix the wireless part of the connection, which is a different job from improving the line itself. Your provider delivers a certain speed to the router; everything that happens after that — walls, distance, interference, band choice, the age of the hardware — decides how much of it reaches the device in your hand.
Start by finding out how much you are losing. Plug a laptop into the router with an Ethernet cable and run a speed test, then run the same test over Wi-Fi from where you normally sit. The gap between those two numbers is the size of the prize. If it is small, your Wi-Fi is fine and the fixes below will not help — read how to fix slow internet instead.
The steps below are ordered by how much difference they typically make, not by how impressive they sound.
1. Move the router — the biggest single win
Wi-Fi radiates outward from the router in all directions, and every obstacle between it and your device costs signal. Most homes lose more speed to router placement than to any other cause.
- Central and high. A shelf in the middle of the home beats a corner of the ground floor by a wide margin.
- Out in the open. Not inside a media cabinet, not in the meter cupboard where the line enters, not behind the television.
- Away from water and metal. Fish tanks, radiators, mirrors and metal shelving absorb or reflect 5 GHz signal badly.
- Away from microwaves and cordless phones, which sit right on top of the 2.4 GHz band.
- Antennas positioned deliberately. With external antennas, one vertical and one horizontal gives better coverage across floors than both pointing straight up.
If the line enters the house in an awkward spot, a longer Ethernet run from the modem to a better-placed router is usually a bigger upgrade than any new hardware.
2. Put the right devices on the right band
Almost every modern router broadcasts on at least two bands, and they behave very differently:
- 2.4 GHz — travels further and penetrates walls better, but is slower and heavily congested. Best for smart-home devices, printers and anything far from the router.
- 5 GHz — much faster and far less crowded, but weakens quickly through walls and floors. Best for laptops, phones, TVs and consoles in the same or an adjacent room.
- 6 GHz (Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7) — faster still and almost empty, with the shortest range. Excellent for a high-demand device with line of sight to the router.
If your router publishes both bands under one name, band steering usually gets this right, but not always — a device that clings to 2.4 GHz while sitting next to the router is a common cause of unexplained slowness. Splitting the bands into separate network names lets you pin each device where it belongs.
3. Change the channel if you have neighbours
In a flat or a terraced street, dozens of networks may be competing for the same airspace. Wi-Fi devices politely take turns, so a crowded channel means every device waits — which shows up as speed that is fine at night and poor in the evening.
- On 2.4 GHz, only channels 1, 6 and 11 do not overlap. Pick whichever of the three is least used around you.
- On 5 GHz, choose a wider, higher channel where fewer neighbours reach. Many routers avoid the DFS channels by default even though they are often the quietest.
- Use a Wi-Fi analyser app on a phone to see what your neighbours are using before choosing.
- If your router has an "auto channel" setting, a reboot forces it to re-evaluate — useful after neighbours change their own setup.
4. Replace a router that is past its useful life
Hardware age sets a hard ceiling. A router from the Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) era cannot deliver a modern connection's speed to any device, regardless of configuration. If your wired test is far faster than your best-case Wi-Fi test taken right next to the router, the router itself is the bottleneck.
What to look for in a replacement:
- Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) or newer — the meaningful gain is not raw headline speed but how well it handles many devices at once.
- Support for Smart Queue Management (SQM), which keeps latency low when the line is busy.
- Gigabit or faster Ethernet ports, so the wired side is not the new limit.
- An active firmware update policy from the manufacturer.
Also check whether your provider's supplied box is doing double duty as modem and router. Combined units are usually the weakest link; running the provider's box in bridge or modem mode with your own router behind it is a common, effective upgrade.
5. Fix dead zones with mesh, not repeaters
If parts of the home have no usable signal, extending coverage is the fix — but how you extend it matters. A basic repeater receives and re-sends on the same radio, roughly halving throughput for every device connected to it. A mesh system with a dedicated backhaul, or better still an access point connected by Ethernet, avoids that penalty entirely.
Order of preference: a wired access point, then mesh with a dedicated backhaul band, then mesh without one, and a plain repeater only as a last resort.
6. Keep firmware current and the network secured
- Update the router firmware. It fixes real performance and stability bugs, and many routers never do it on their own.
- Use WPA2 or WPA3 with a strong password. An open network is not just a security problem; uninvited devices consume real bandwidth.
- Restart the router occasionally. Months of uptime degrade performance on consumer hardware more than most people expect.
- Turn off the guest network if nobody uses it — each extra broadcast network costs a little airtime.
7. Manage what else is on the air
Wi-Fi is a shared medium: every device transmitting takes airtime away from the others, and slow devices take disproportionately more of it. A single old 2.4 GHz camera streaming continuously can measurably slow a whole network.
- Move bulk transfers — backups, console updates, cloud sync — to overnight.
- Wire anything that never moves: desktop PCs, consoles, smart TVs.
- Enable QoS or SQM so a large download does not starve a video call.
Measure the difference
Change one thing at a time and re-test from the same spot, on the same device, with nothing else running. Otherwise it is impossible to tell which change helped, and normal variation between runs will mislead you — speed test results vary for reasons unrelated to anything you did.
Realistic expectations: good Wi-Fi in the same room typically delivers most of your line speed. Two rooms and a wall away, losing a third is normal. If a device three rooms away gets a small fraction of the plan speed, that is a coverage problem to solve with placement or mesh — not a reason to buy a faster plan.
