Privacy Policy

Summary: The speed test itself runs in your browser — your test results are not sent to a database we operate. The site does, however, use Google Analytics to understand aggregate traffic, and serves ads through Google AdSense. Both place cookies and may process data as described below.

1. Who this policy covers

This policy describes how CheckMySpeed.org ("we", "us", "the site") handles information when you visit any page on the domain checkmyspeed.org. By using the site you agree to the practices described here.

2. Information processed when you run the speed test

The speed test on the home page runs entirely in your web browser. It downloads files from public Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) such as Cloudflare and uses the timing of those downloads to estimate your connection speed. Your test results — the numbers you see on screen — are computed locally and are not sent to a database that we operate.

The CDNs that host the test files will see standard HTTP request information (such as your IP address and user-agent) the same way any website you visit does. We do not control those providers' logging practices; their handling of that data is governed by their own policies.

3. Information collected automatically

Like most websites, our hosting provider records standard server logs — including IP address, browser user-agent, referring URL, and the page requested — for technical, security, and abuse-prevention purposes. These logs are kept for a limited period and are not used to build advertising or marketing profiles of individual visitors.

4. Cookies and similar technologies

CheckMySpeed.org uses cookies and similar storage in two situations:

  • Analytics cookies — set by Google Analytics so that we can see anonymised, aggregated traffic patterns (which pages are visited, how often, from which broad region).
  • Advertising cookies — set by Google AdSense and its advertising partners to serve ads, measure ad performance, and (where you have consented) personalise the ads you see.

For a full breakdown of which cookies are used and how to opt out, see our Cookie Policy.

5. Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to measure how the site is used. Analytics processes information such as your IP address (truncated where supported), pages viewed, time on page, approximate location at country/region level, device type, and referring source. We do not upload personally identifying information to Analytics, and we do not link analytics data to other identifiers.

You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing Google's browser opt-out add-on, or by managing cookies through your browser settings.

6. Google AdSense and ad personalisation

This site is monetised in part through Google AdSense. As a result:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other sites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.
  • You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
  • You can also opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting aboutads.info or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.com.

Google's full advertising policies are available at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.

7. Third-party services we use

  • Google Analytics — traffic measurement.
  • Google AdSense — advertising.
  • Google Fonts — typography. Loading fonts from Google's CDN exposes a standard HTTP request to Google as part of rendering the page.
  • Public CDNs (e.g. Cloudflare) — used as the source of test files for the speed measurement.

8. Your rights under GDPR, CCPA, and similar laws

If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, California, or another jurisdiction with comparable privacy law, you have rights regarding personal data processed about you. Those typically include the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing, the right to data portability, and the right to object to certain processing. Because we do not maintain a database of identifiable visitor records ourselves, most data-subject requests should be directed to the third-party services listed above (Google Analytics and Google AdSense) using their own request mechanisms.

To exercise rights against data we control directly (for example, a request to remove a comment you sent us by email, or to ask what we hold about you), contact us using the details below.

9. Data retention

Server logs are retained by the hosting provider for a short period for operational and security purposes. Analytics data retention is configured at the Google Analytics property level (currently the standard retention window for events). Email correspondence sent to us is retained only for as long as needed to handle the inquiry.

10. Children's privacy

CheckMySpeed.org is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If a parent or guardian believes a child has provided personal information, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.

11. Security

The site is served over HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security of any data transmitted over the internet, but we use commonly accepted standards to reduce risk.

12. Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated to reflect changes in the site, in the third-party services used, or in applicable law. The "Last reviewed" date at the top of the page indicates when the policy was most recently reviewed.

13. Contact

For privacy questions or requests, contact [email protected].

14. Governing law

This policy is governed by the laws of [Jurisdiction]. Where mandatory local law gives you stronger rights than this policy, those local rights prevail.
